Preaching from Home

Family Devotional Hymns Sunday, May 13

In the early 16th century, with the Reformation, worship life was changing. The monastic tradition, which practiced the seven hours of prayer throughout the day, did not work with family life. Yet, there was a need for prayer in the daily lives of families as well as for material to help them. In 1529, Martin Luther’s Small Catechism was published. In it he had suggestions for family devotions which included singing hymns. On this Mother’s Day, we will look at Lutheran women hymn writers and how women used hymns to preach and teach the Lutheran faith in their homes. Translation of some of these hymns will be drawn from Luther Seminary Professor Gracia Grindal’s new book, “Preaching From Home: The Stories of Seven Lutheran Women Hymn Writers.”

Morning and Evening Hymns Sunday, May 20

A common subject for Lutheran hymns, is the time of day, usually based on Luther’s morning and evening prayers in the Small Catechism. We will explore the images of morning and evening in these hymns and how these hymns were used in family devotional life. Evening and Morning by Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) and Luther’s Morning and Evening Prayers, as well as other hymns will be discussed.
